React is an open-source JavaScript library built by Facebook in 2013, which uses React internally. It is used by large companies like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Microsoft, Slack, Asana, Airbnb, and more.

The current stable version is 16.X, released in November 2018 (with smaller incremental updates since then).


Angular was developed by Google in 2010. It’s important to note that Angular is a TypeScript-based JavaScript framework. In 2016, Google released Angular2, which offered a substantial shift. Angular is used by organizations like The Guardian and

The latest stable version is Angular 10, which was released in June 2020.


Also also known as Vue.js, Vue is the youngest out of the three. It was developed by ex-Google employee Evan You in 2014 and has increased in popularity over the past few years. Though not as popular as React, it’s still used by large companies like 9Gag, Alibaba, and Gitlab.

Vue 3, currently in the alpha phase, is planning to move to TypeScript.

Advantages and Disadvantages


Advantages of React

  • Easy to learn since it is lightweight and offers a simple JS design using a syntax that combines HTML and JavaScript. React also offers great documentation, which is something to consider for initial learners.
  • Fast due to React’s Virtual DOM implementation and rendering optimizations.
  • Top-notch Progressive Web App (PWA) support, especially with its create-react-app template generator.
  • React implements functional programming with components, which allows for reusable code, creating a modularized design. This makes apps easier to maintain and build upon, allowing for complex infrastructure to be more easily developed and scaled.

Disadvantages of React

  • React is an incredibly un-opinionated technology, which means that developers have to make their own design choices.
  • It’s documentation is constantly updating, so sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with the latest documentation.
  • React covers only the UI Layers of the app and nothing else. So you still need to choose some other technologies to get a complete tooling set for development in the project.
  • React uses JSX which can be a learning barrier to some newer developers, though it does have its own benefits.


Advantages of Angular

  • Angular uses TypeScript, which provides great support for type checking and other external tooling.
  • Angular is supported by Google, which means its backed by a dependable organization. They work with detailed documentation and a large community, making it a reliable framework to learn.
  • Angular-language-service allows for autocomplete inside of component external HTML template files, allowing you to speed up your development.

Disadvantages of Angular

  • Angular offers a variety of different structures like Injectables, Components, Pipes, Modules, and more. This makes it harder to learn in comparison to the Vue and React, which focus on the component.
  • Slower performance because it works with the real DOM, though it can be tackled using the ChangeDetectionStrategy, which helps manually control the rendering process.


Advantages of Vue

  • Vue offers detailed documentation, which aids in the already low learning curve for developers. You can make powerful single-page applications just with knowledge of HTML and JavaScript.
  • It is used for building single-page applications and more complex web interfaces. Furthermore, Vue applications integrate easily into an existing infrastructure with no negative effect on the system.
  • Vue takes advantage of the virtual DOM, making it faster than Angular. Also, Vue is small, so its speed and flexibility are optimal, allowing for better performance in comparison to the other frameworks.

Disadvantages of Vue

  • Vue offers fewer resources than React and Angular as it is relatively newer and has a smaller market share. This means that knowledge sharing and support are less available.

React is one of the most popular JavaScript projects with 160k stars on GitHub. It’s developed and maintained by Facebook, and it’s used internally in many of their projects. Additionally, it powers over 2 million websites, according to BuiltWith‘s usage statistics.


Angular is developed by Google, but surprisingly it’s not used in some of their flagship products such as Search or Youtube. It’s often used in enterprise projects, and it powers over 97,000 websites based on BuiltWith‘s data.

It’s the least starred among the three frameworks, with 68k stars on GitHub. However, when switching from Angular 1 to Angular 2, they created an entirely new repository instead of continuing the AngularJS project, which also has 59k stars.


Out of the three frameworks, Vue has the most stars on GitHub, with 176k stars. The project is developed and led by ex-Googler Evan You. It’s a very strong, independent project in the open-source community and is used by over 1 million websites, according to BuiltWith.


When choosing a framework or library, you need to think about performance as well.

It’s important to note that the quality of development and following best practices when it comes to web performance is more important than the choice of framework.

But since there are some performance metrics and differences, I’ll look into them and explain how each could affect your development efforts.

JS Framework Benchmark

As you can see above, Vue is considerably slower than Angular and React at selecting rows. On the other hand, Angular and React are not very efficient at swapping rows.

These are the only substantial differences in rendering benchmarks — and in most cases, won’t produce noticeable results. Since selecting rows is a more common functionality than swapping rows, I’d say that this benchmark puts Vue into third place behind Angular and React that share the top position.

When it comes to memory and booting time, React and Vue score very well, but Angular is a bit slower. Angular can take 150ms to boot a basic script and requires more memory to run.

Additional Features

For more advanced applications, the front-end framework in use should be able to perform some tasks that improve performance and can scale better. Two technologies that are key are server-side rendering (SSR) and virtualization.


React supports server-side rendering with the official ReactDOMServer package. For virtualization, you can use a popular third-party tool called React Virtualized.


Angular has the official Angular Universal package for SSR, and an official component for virtual scrolling and efficient rendering of large lists.


Server-side rendering is supported in Vue as well with the official SSR package. In addition, you can also use the Nuxt.js framework which is built on top of Vue and supports SSR.

The virtualization options in Vue are not that strong, unfortunately. In my opinion, Vue Virtual Scroll List is the best solution for virtual scrolling, but it’s a bit buggy and not as stable as the options for React and Angular.

Learning Curve


React offers a Getting Started guide that should help one set up React in about an hour. The documentation is thorough and complete, with solutions to common issues already present on Stack Overflow.

React is not a complete framework and advanced features require the use of third-party libraries. This makes the learning curve of the core framework not so steep but depends on the path you take with additional functionality.


Angular has the most complex project structure out of the three, and since it’s a fully-blown front-end framework, it relies on more concepts.

Aside from components, Angular supports modules and services. It expects you to write and design your codebase in a specific way that makes your project more maintainable when it scales up. As for syntax, since Angular works best with TypeScript, it’s important that you know TypeScript when building an Angular project.

In my opinion, Angular is the hardest to learn for the average developer because it’s more complex and relies on TypeScript.


Vue provides higher customizability and hence is easier to learn than Angular or React. Further, Vue has an overlap with Angular and React with respect to their functionality like the use of components. Hence, the transition to Vue from either of the two is an easy option. 


The answer to the debate of Angular vs React vs Vue is that there’s no absolute right choice, a conclusion that you probably expected.

Each of these libraries has its own benefits and drawbacks. Based on the project you’re working on and your individual requirements, one of these is going to be more suitable than the others. It’s always key to do your own research before deciding, especially if you’re going to be working on a business venture and not on a personal project.
